Drivers caught travelling over the speed limit on certain sections of Britain’s M5 motorway will have their fines used to fund road safety improvements.
The news comes as part of an innovative road safety scheme announced late last week, which said that some £270,000 collected in speeding fines in and around Gloucestershire would go into a ‘problem solving hub’ for nearby towns and neighbourhoods, to help improve road safety.
According the reports, some fifty towns and parish councils across Gloucestershire have shown interest in the initiative.
Recently re-elected Police and Crime Commissioner, Martin Surl, who kick-started the campaign, said: “Safe and social driving remains one of my priorities. The money is a windfall I can use to invest in systems and partnerships that will enable us to tackle issues like speeding and hopefully come up with some new ideas to make our roads safer”.
Mr Surl stressed the ongoing importance of road safety improvements, not just in Gloucestershire, but across the UK.
It is hoped that similar schemes will be adopted across Britain in coming years.
